A single Fellowship is awarded every other year for two years’ research in a specified study area.
Building on the Royal Commission’s support for design, a new major Fellowship in Design, which seeks to explore important current design issues, was introduced in 2006. The next Fellowship is due to be awarded in 2010 It will be competitive and applications are being sought. The Commissioners have selected as the subject for this year’s award:
Too often, the 'new' economy of the creative industries - and especially design - is treated as separate or distinct from the 'old' economy, the world of engineering and manufacturing, a separation that has been summarised with the phrase "we'll write it, they'll print it". The purpose of this year's Fellowship is to find practicable ways of bridging these two worlds: to explore applications of design, and design thinking, to productive industry in an early 21st century British context; to suggest workable ways of re-energising productive industry through design; and in the process to enhance public understanding, through an exemplar with wider application, of the deep connections which in reality exist between the two worlds.
A broad, holistic approach is encouraged, the aim being to ‘make a difference’. Entries will accordingly be accepted not only from individuals but also from formal or informal partnerships. Candidates should be UK or Commonwealth citizens, aiming to carry out research over a 2 year period, culminating in either a personal mark of distinction (e.g. PhD) or a milestone output of significance. Projects that aim to inform the wider community are particularly encouraged. In all cases, candidates are asked to identify a mentor who can contribute to, and make expert and objective commentary on the candidate’s work, and who will ensure linkage and promulgation of the work to the appropriate peer group.
Download the application form Word doc which candidates should complete, together with an outline of the proposed project of no more than two pages of A4, plus a CV. Lavishly produced or illustrated submissions are not required. The full application should then be sent by e-mail, preferably as a PDF, to applications@royalcommission1851.org.
Based on these applications a shortlist will be selected and these candidates will be invited to provide a further, more comprehensive written submission before being interviewed.
Closing date for initial applications - Thursday 8 July 2010
Short list promulgated - mid August 2010
Closing date for second submissions - Thursday 23 September 2010
